How to Use THCA for Pain: A Buying Guide

THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is the acidic, non-intoxicating form of THC found in raw and unheated cannabis. It becomes delta-9 THC when heat is applied, through a reaction called decarboxylation. Fresh and dried flower can test at 20% THCA or more while showing almost no THC.
The plant does not make THC. It makes THCA. An enzyme called THCA synthase turns cannabigerolic acid (CBGA) into tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, which collects in the resin glands on the flower.
THCA carries an extra carboxyl group that keeps the molecule from fitting the CB1 receptor in the brain. No CB1 binding means no high. The compound stays stable inside the plant as long as it is not heated, cooked, or left in strong light for months.
Almost every cannabis product starts as THCA. A jar labeled "25% THC" is close to 25% THCA on the lab report, plus a small amount of THC that formed on its own.
Decarboxylation is the name of the reaction. Heat breaks the carboxyl group off the THCA molecule, carbon dioxide escapes, and delta-9 THC is what remains.
How fast it happens depends on temperature and time:
The lost carboxyl group has weight, so the math uses a factor of 0.877. Total THC = delta-9 THC + (THCA x 0.877).
Raw THCA does not get you high because it does not activate CB1 receptors in a meaningful way. If you smoke or vape THCA flower, you are inhaling THC, because the heat does the conversion before the smoke reaches your lungs. Eating raw THCA, such as juiced leaves, does not produce intoxication for most people.
Federal law defines hemp as cannabis with 0.3% delta-9 THC or less on a dry weight basis. THCA is not part of that number, so flower that tests at 25% THCA and 0.2% delta-9 THC can pass a federal hemp test on paper.
Regulators have pushed back on that reading. The DEA has taken the position that hemp-derived intoxicating cannabinoids are not exempt from the Controlled Substances Act, and a growing list of states now cap total THC instead of delta-9 alone. Rules shift from month to month, so check your own state before you order.
THCA hemp flower looks, smells, and smokes like dispensary cannabis because it is the same plant before the heat step. Buyers in states without adult-use dispensaries order it for mail delivery.
Two things to keep in mind: shipping rules differ by state, and quality varies more than in a regulated dispensary market. A batch lab report is the only real proof of what sits in the jar.
Lab and animal studies have looked at THCA for inflammation, nausea, and nerve cell protection. Human trials are close to nonexistent, so any health claim you see on a product page is a guess.
