How to Use THCA for Pain Relief
Learn how to effectively use THCA to alleviate pain with this comprehensive guide.
THCA and CBD are two different cannabinoids that do two different things. THCA is the acid form of delta-9 THC. It sits in raw cannabis flower and does not produce a high. Add heat above 220 degrees Fahrenheit and THCA drops a carboxyl group, becomes delta-9 THC, and intoxication starts. CBD is a separate molecule. Heat does not turn CBD into THC at any temperature a vape coil or a joint reaches.
Pick THCA if you want a high. Pick CBD if you do not.
Molecular formula: THCA is C22H30O3. CBD is C21H30O2. One carbon and one oxygen separate them.
Decarboxylation is the THCA reaction. Lab math runs like this: total THC = delta-9 THC + (THCA x 0.877). The 0.877 factor corrects for the CO2 mass that leaves the molecule.
Vape coils run 350 F to 450 F. A burning joint runs 600 F and higher. Both convert THCA to THC before the vapor or smoke reaches your lungs. Eat raw flower and no conversion happens.
CBD resists that reaction. A 2023 lab study reported small amounts of CBD converting to THC in simulated stomach acid. Follow-up work is limited and the reported yields were low.
The 2018 Farm Bill defines hemp as cannabis with delta-9 THC at or below 0.3 percent on a dry weight basis. THCA is not delta-9 THC, so THCA flower that tests under that limit can ship under federal law. State rules vary. In July 2025 the Senate Agriculture Committee advanced a bill that would ban intoxicating hemp cannabinoids, THCA included. That bill was pending at the time of writing.
CBD is legal in most states. Some states restrict sales. The FDA does not allow CBD as a food additive or dietary supplement ingredient. Epidiolex, a prescription CBD drug, is approved for two epilepsy syndromes.
THCA flower tests at 15 to 25 percent THCA by weight. One gram of 20 percent THCA flower holds about 200 mg THCA, or about 175 mg THC after full conversion. A 0.3 gram joint runs near 50 mg THC. Start with one or two puffs.
CBD doses in OTC products run 10 to 50 mg. Epidiolex runs 10 to 20 mg per kg per day. Liver enzyme monitoring is part of the Epidiolex label.
Standard urine tests look for THC-COOH, a THC metabolite. Smoked or vaped THCA produces THC, and the body converts THC to THC-COOH. CBD can trigger a false positive on some immunoassays. Confirmatory GC-MS separates CBD from THC metabolites.
THCA formats: raw flower, pre-rolls, vape carts, concentrates, hash, diamonds.
CBD formats: tinctures, gummies, capsules, topicals, isolate powder. Full-spectrum CBD carries trace THC. CBD isolate carries none.
THCA is a THC precursor. Heat converts it. CBD is not a THC precursor in any practical setting. Buy THCA for the high. Buy CBD for the opposite.
