How to Use THCA for Pain: A Buying Guide
THCA may ease pain without psychoactive effects. Learn how to choose THCA products, dose them, and avoid common buying mistakes.
THCA stands for tetrahydrocannabinolic acid. It is the most abundant cannabinoid in fresh, unheated cannabis. The plant builds THCA first. Over time, and with light and heat, a small share of it turns into delta-9 THC.
The two molecules are close relatives. THCA has the formula C22H30O4 and a molar mass near 358.5 g/mol. Delta-9 THC has the formula C21H30O2 and a molar mass near 314.5 g/mol. THCA carries an extra carboxyl group (COOH). That group is the difference that matters.
THCA vs CBD: Understanding the Key Differences
The carboxyl group changes the shape of the molecule. That shape fits CB1 receptors in the brain poorly. CB1 is the receptor delta-9 THC binds to produce intoxication. Raw THCA binds weakly, so eating raw cannabis flower or drinking raw juice does not cause a high for most people.
Decarboxylation is the name for the reaction that removes the carboxyl group. Heat drives it. The group leaves as carbon dioxide, and THCA becomes delta-9 THC.
THCA vs Delta 9 THC: Comparison and Top Pick
Smoking, vaping, and dabbing apply enough heat to convert THCA. That is why a flower sample labeled 0.2% delta-9 THC and 24% THCA will still feel potent when smoked.
The mass conversion factor is 0.877. Labs use it because the lost carboxyl group has weight. In theory, 100 mg of THCA yields about 87.7 mg of delta-9 THC.
Two methods are common, and they do not report the same numbers.
A certificate of analysis (COA) from an ISO 17025 lab should list both numbers, the sample date, the batch ID, and the testing lab name. Total THC is calculated as delta-9 THC plus (THCA x 0.877).
The 2018 Farm Bill defines hemp as cannabis with delta-9 THC at or below 0.3% on a dry weight basis. THCA is a separate molecule in the statute. Hemp with 0.2% delta-9 THC and 20% THCA can pass the federal definition as written.
States set their own rules. Several states now use total THC, not delta-9 THC, to classify hemp. Others have added THCA to controlled substance lists or restricted THCA flower sales. Rules changed in 2024 and 2025. Check your state law before you buy.
Read the label. A product listed as "THCA 25%" will act like THC when burned and like THCA when swallowed.
Most THCA data comes from cells and rodents. Published work reports anti-inflammatory, anti-nausea, and neuroprotective activity in those models. Human trials are limited. There is no FDA-approved THCA drug, and no established human dose.
Known unknowns: long-term safety, drug interactions, and effects on pregnancy. THCA may interact with the same liver enzymes (CYP2C9, CYP3A4) that process other cannabinoids and some prescription drugs.
