Start with one bucket, one plant

Hydroponics means growing in water with dissolved nutrients instead of soil. For a first cannabis grow that sounds intimidating, but the simplest version is a 5-gallon bucket, a net pot, a lid, an air pump, an air stone, and a nutrient line built for hydro. Roots hang in the solution, the air stone keeps oxygen in the water, and you swap the reservoir once a week. Nothing else moves. No pumps to fail, no drip lines to clog, no timers to misread.

Cannabis Hydroponics Problems: Common Issues and Solutions

Why people choose hydro at all

Roots get oxygen and nutrients directly, so growth tends to move faster than in soil, and problems surface sooner. A plant in soil can hide a pH problem for a week. In hydro, a droopy plant tells you in hours. That speed cuts both ways: mistakes show up fast, and so does recovery. You also skip bags of potting mix and the pest eggs that sometimes ride along in them.

What you need in the room

Skip the additives at first. Base nutrients, calmag, pH control. That is the whole list.

Water, pH, and EC without the headache

Three numbers run your reservoir.

Water temperature. Keep it between 65 and 72 degrees F (18 to 22 C). Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen, and low oxygen is what invites root rot. If the reservoir runs hot, insulate it or move the air pump somewhere cooler.

pH. Hydro cannabis likes about 5.5 to 6.5. I aim for 5.8 to 6.0 in veg and let it drift up a little in flower. Adjust after you mix nutrients, not before. Check daily for the first week so you learn how your tap water moves.

EC or PPM. This measures nutrient strength. Seedlings want very little, around 0.4 to 0.8 mS/cm. Vegetative plants sit near 1.2 to 2.0. Flowering plants often run 1.6 to 2.4. If leaf tips burn, dilute. If plants look pale and hungry, raise it in small steps.

A weekly routine that works

  1. Top off with plain pH'd water as the level drops. Evaporation concentrates nutrients.
  2. Measure pH and EC after topping off, then adjust.
  3. Every 7 to 10 days, dump the reservoir, mix fresh nutrients, and rinse the bucket.
  4. Check roots. They should be white or cream and smell like nothing much. Brown and slimy means root rot. Fix oxygen and water temperature first.
  5. Clean the air stone and tubing. Salt buildup kills airflow.

Light and environment basics

Vegetative stage runs 18 hours on, 6 off. Flowering runs 12 and 12 with no light leaks. Keep temps around 70 to 80 F with lights on and let them fall a few degrees at night. Humidity runs higher in veg (60 to 70%) and lower in flower (40 to 50%) to protect against bud rot. Hang LEDs 18 to 24 inches above the canopy and raise them as plants stretch.

Final word

Get one bucket running, log pH, EC, water temp, and what you fed, and let one full grow teach you more than ten articles. Hydro rewards consistency, not gear.
