Cannabis Hydroponics for Beginners

Hydroponics grows cannabis without soil. Roots sit in water or an inert medium. You control water, nutrients, oxygen, and pH. A basic setup uses a reservoir, air stone, net pots, and clay pebbles. Coco coir and rockwool also work. Start with 1 to 4 plants.

Pick a System

Deep water culture (DWC) is the simplest. A 5-gallon bucket holds one plant. An air pump and air stone add oxygen. The water level stays 1 inch below the net pot. Coco coir is a drain-to-waste option. It holds water and air. Feed once or twice per day.

Water and pH

Cannabis in hydroponics needs pH 5.5 to 6.5. Check pH each day. Adjust with pH up or pH down. Water temperature: 65 to 72 F (18 to 22 C). Warmer water holds less oxygen. Cold water slows roots. Use a thermometer.

Tap water may contain chlorine. Let it sit 24 hours or use a carbon filter. Reverse osmosis water has no minerals. Add calmag if you use RO.

Nutrients and EC

Use a two-part or three-part hydroponic nutrient. Mix at 1/4 strength for seedlings. Increase to 1.2 to 2.0 mS/cm for veg. Flowering runs 1.4 to 2.4 mS/cm. Measure EC or PPM with a meter. Overfeeding causes leaf tip burn. Underfeeding causes pale leaves.

Change the reservoir every 7 to 14 days. Top off with plain water between changes. Clean the bucket with hydrogen peroxide or mild soap. Rinse well.

Light and Air

Vegetative stage: 18 hours light, 6 hours dark. Flowering stage: 12 hours light, 12 hours dark. LED panels at 30 to 40 watts per square foot work. Keep lights 18 to 24 inches from the canopy. Add a fan for air movement. Exhaust fan removes heat and humidity.

Humidity: 60 to 70% for seedlings, 40 to 50% for flower. Temperature: 70 to 80 F (21 to 27 C).

Common Beginner Errors

Harvest Basics

Flowering takes 8 to 10 weeks for most strains. Check trichomes with a 60x loupe. Clear trichomes mean early. Cloudy with some amber means peak THC. Flush with plain water for 7 to 10 days before harvest. Dry at 60 F and 60% humidity for 7 to 14 days. Cure in jars for 2 to 4 weeks.

Legal Note

Cannabis cultivation laws differ by US state. Some states allow home grow. Others do not. Federal law still lists cannabis as a Schedule I substance. Verify local rules.
