What humidity should a cannabis drying tent be?
Hold the tent at 55 to 65 percent relative humidity (RH) and 60 to 70 F. That range lets flower dry in 7 to 14 days without mold or a hay smell. Above 65 percent RH, bud rot and powdery mildew rise fast. Below 50 percent RH, buds dry on the outside while the stem stays wet, and the cure never develops.

What you need before you hang anything
- Calibrated hygrometer, or two so you can compare readings
- Inline exhaust fan with a variable speed controller
- Small oscillating fan, aimed away from the plants
- Humidifier and dehumidifier sized to the tent volume
- Dark tent or a room with no direct light
- Jars or turkey bags with hygrometers for the cure
Step-by-step tent drying
- Clean the tent and run it empty for two hours to check the baseline RH and temperature.
- Hang the hygrometer at canopy height, near the middle of the tent, not against a wall.
- Cut plants at the base or take branches with 6 to 8 inches of stem left on.
- Hang branches upside down with 4 to 6 inches between them so air can pass on all sides.
- Set the exhaust fan to low, enough to swap the tent air every 1 to 2 minutes.
- Point the oscillating fan at a tent wall so it stirs air without hitting the flower.
- Set the humidifier or dehumidifier to hold 58 to 62 percent RH as your target.
- Close the tent and keep the room dark for the first 48 hours.
- Check the hygrometer and squeeze a test bud twice a day.
- Adjust the humidifier, dehumidifier, or fan speed by one small step when RH drifts outside 55 to 65 percent.
- Snap a stem when you think drying is done. A clean snap with a dry string means it is time to cure.
- Move flower into jars or bags, then burp them daily for two weeks.
Reading the signs during the dry
RH keeps climbing above 65 percent
Add airflow before you add heat. Raise exhaust speed one notch, spread the branches farther apart, and run the dehumidifier. If RH stays high for more than a day, break large colas into smaller pieces.
RH drops under 50 percent
Slow the exhaust fan and add a humidifier. A fast dry locks in chlorophyll and gives you that sharp hay taste, and no amount of curing fixes it.
Bud feels crisp on day four
That is too fast. Drop the fan speed, raise RH to 60 percent, and leave the stems intact instead of trimming wet.
When to stop drying and start curing
Small stems should snap, larger stems should bend with a stringy core, and buds should feel dry on the surface while still slightly spongy. Aim for 58 to 62 percent RH inside the jar after 24 hours. If the jar reads higher, spread the flower out for a few hours and jar it again.
