Medical Cannabis Prices vs Recreational: A Buying Guide
Medical cannabis often costs less than recreational thanks to lower taxes and patient discounts. Compare taxes, card fees, and dispensary menus before you buy.
The price tag on the shelf is not the final price. Taxes stack on top. Washington charges a 37% excise tax on retail cannabis. California adds a 15% excise tax plus state and local sales tax. Illinois charges up to 25% on products above 35% THC. Colorado charges 15% excise plus 15% sales tax in many cities. Those rates apply at the register.
Federal tax law is the largest single cost. IRS code 280E bars deductions for businesses that traffic Schedule I substances. Cannabis is Schedule I. A dispensary cannot deduct rent, payroll, insurance, or marketing. Industry studies put the effective federal tax rate on gross income between 40% and 70%. That number sits inside the shelf price.
Compliance adds more. Each harvest goes to a third-party lab. Potency, pesticides, heavy metals, and microbial tests cost $500 to $1,500 per batch in most states. Packaging must be child-resistant, opaque, and labeled with warnings. Seed-to-sale systems such as Metrc charge monthly tracking fees. Security cameras, vaults, and armored pickup are required.
Supply rules matter. Some states cap the number of retail licenses. Fewer stores means less competition on price. Federal law blocks interstate shipping. Each state grows its own supply, often indoors. Indoor cultivation uses 2,000 to 3,000 kWh of electricity per pound of dried flower. Energy, HVAC, and lighting run all year.
why are cannabis prices high at dispensaries
Banking costs reach the buyer. Most national banks refuse cannabis accounts. Dispensaries pay cash handling fees, armored car service, and higher loan rates. That adds about 1% to 5% to operating costs.
Ask for the out-the-door total before checkout. Compare price per milligram of THC across brands. Buy flower in 7-gram or 14-gram units when the store allows it. Larger weights carry a lower cost per gram. Check the package date. Ask which brands are produced in-state. Local flower skips some shipping cost. Ask about tax-inclusive pricing. Some stores quote it. Most do not.
