How to Evaluate Cannabis Shake Quality
Learn how to assess the quality of cannabis shake, focusing on texture, appearance, and scent for a better online purchase experience.
Shake cannabis is the loose, trichome-dusted plant material that collects at the bottom of a bag or jar, and the best things to do with it are smoke or vape it in a bowl, roll it into joints, or save it for edibles. Larger amounts work well decarbed and infused into butter or oil, dry-sifted into kief, or pressed into hash. Because shake is already broken into small pieces, it burns faster than whole buds, so it shines as a flexible ingredient more than a display piece.
Shake is the mix of small flower fragments, sugar leaves, and loose trichomes that break off larger buds during trimming, packing, and handling. It tends to look drier and finer than whole flower but carries many of the same cannabinoids.
Quality varies widely. Shake from a fresh, well-trimmed harvest can test close to the flower it came from, while old shake that sat in a hot car loses potency to light, heat, and air.
Almost everything you do with flower works with shake, with a few adjustments for texture and moisture.
Decarboxylation comes first. Spread shake on a baking sheet and heat it at about 240°F (115°C) for 30 to 45 minutes to convert THCA into THC.
Next, simmer the decarbed shake in melted butter or coconut oil for 2 to 3 hours at low heat, stirring now and then. Strain through cheesecloth, squeeze out the oil, and use the infusion in any recipe that calls for fat.
Yes. Shake often holds plenty of loose trichomes, so a dry sift through a 100 to 150 micron screen pulls a surprising amount of kief from a modest pile.
Shake the material over the screen, collect the golden powder, and either use it as a bowl topper or press it into hash with warmth and pressure. Save the leftover plant matter for edibles instead of tossing it.
Not always, but it is less consistent. Shake has more exposed surface area and more stems, so it dries out and degrades faster than dense buds.
When you can, buy shake from a licensed shop that lists harvest dates and lab results, since potency testing tells you more than appearance does.
Keep it in an airtight glass jar away from light and heat, ideally with a humidity pack to slow drying. Store it apart from whole flower so the finer material does not pull moisture from your buds.
Use older shake first. Long exposure to air and warmth degrades THC into CBN, which shifts effects toward drowsy.
