Kief is the collected trichomes from cannabis flower, the sticky resin glands that hold most of the plant's THC, CBD, and terpenes. A grinder with a screen in it does the job by accident every time you roll a joint.
What Kief Is, Exactly
Cannabis grows a few kinds of trichomes. The ones that matter are glandular trichomes, and the largest of them sit on a stalk with a round head on top, like a tiny mushroom. That head is packed with cannabinoids and aromatic oils. When the flower dries and gets handled, the heads snap off. What you sweep out of the bottom chamber is kief.
The word comes from Arabic kayf, roughly meaning pleasure or well-being, and it shows up spelled as keef just as often. Dispensaries also sell it as dry sift or, less accurately, pollen. Pollen is a misnomer. Kief has nothing to do with the male plant.
How Kief Is Made
Two steps cover every method: get the trichomes off the plant, then separate them from plant matter with a screen. Cold and dry material releases trichomes more cleanly. Warm, moist flower smears resin across the mesh and clogs it.
Grinder screen
Most three-chamber and four-chamber grinders have a mesh floor with openings somewhere between 60 and 150 microns. Grind the flower, shake the grinder, and kief collects in the bottom chamber. The yield per session is small and some plant powder always comes through, but it costs nothing extra.
Dry sifting
Dried, cured flower or trim gets worked over a stack of screens with hand agitation or a machine. A common setup runs a 150 micron screen for a first pass, then a 90 to 120 micron screen to clean up the result. Running multiple passes lets you grade kief by purity instead of dumping everything into one pile.
Dry ice sifting
Frozen flower plus dry ice in a bucket lined with a bubble bag. The dry ice makes the plant material brittle, so trichomes knock loose with far less effort and yields climb. The tradeoff is more plant matter and chlorophyll in the final pile, which makes it greener and harsher on the throat.
Mechanical tumblers
Commercial producers use rotating drums with screens. Flower tumbles against mesh for a set time and trichomes drop into a collection tray. Time and temperature are the controls. Run it too long and you are sifting leaf powder along with resin.
What kief is not
Ice water hash also captures trichomes, but it uses water, ice, and heavy agitation, and it comes out with a different texture. Rosin is pressed with heat and pressure. Hash is kief that has been pressed or warmed until it fuses into a solid. Kief is the raw material for both.
How Potent Is Kief?
Lab tests on dry sift land somewhere between 20% and 60% THC by weight. Screen size, starting material, and how much plant matter slipped through all move that number. Flower sits around 15% to 25%, so kief is roughly two to three times stronger per gram. It is a concentrated version of the same plant, not a different drug. A bowl topped with kief is a stronger bowl.

Storing Kief So It Stays Good
Trichome heads are oily, which makes kief sensitive to heat, light, air, and moisture. A small glass jar with a tight lid in a dark drawer at room temperature works. Warmth makes the heads melt together into clumps. That is not ruined product, just harder to work with. Skip the freezer unless you plan to keep it there long term, because every time you open the jar you invite condensation. A silica pack in the outer container handles humidity in damp climates.
Buying Kief: What to Check
Menus label it kief, dry sift, or hash, and the terms get used loosely. Ask for the certificate of analysis. Look at THC percentage, terpene content, and above all the tests for mold, yeast, and pesticides. Kief concentrates whatever was on the flower, so a contaminated batch is worse in kief form than it was as bud.
Color tells you something. Blond or tan with visible sparkle means mostly trichome heads. Green means a lot of leaf made it through the screen. Freshness beats color as a signal, since old kief smells flat and dusty no matter how pale it looks.
