What a percolator bong is

How percolation works
Smoke leaves the bowl, drops through the downstem, and enters the first water chamber. A perc splits that single stream into many small bubbles. Small bubbles have more combined surface area than one large bubble, so the water absorbs more heat and catches more particulate. The smoke then moves to the next chamber and repeats the process. More percs mean more chances for the smoke to cool and for ash and resin to drop out of the stream.

Diffusion is the broad term for pulling smoke through water. Percolation is the specific job of the internal chambers. A diffused downstem does part of that work at the entry point. Percs continue it higher in the tube.

- Inline perc: a horizontal tube with slits along the side. Smooth hits with low drag.
