Can You Overdose on Cannabis Concentrate?
Understanding the risks of overdosing on cannabis concentrate, including signs and what to do if it occurs.
A low dose of cannabis concentrate is typically 1 to 2.5 milligrams (mg) of THC. Because concentrates contain 60% to 90% THC, that equals roughly 1.5 to 4 mg of concentrate by weight, a speck about the size of a grain of rice or a pinhead. For most beginners, 1 mg of THC is a true low dose.
A low dose of cannabis concentrate means consuming 1 to 2.5 mg of THC. This range is far below what most people take in a single dab. A typical dab contains 25 to 75 mg of THC, which is 10 to 30 times a low dose.
Low doses are often called microdoses. They aim to give mild effects without heavy impairment. For concentrates, microdosing requires careful measurement because the product is so potent.
Cannabis concentrates range from 60% to 90% THC. That means 1 gram of concentrate contains 600 to 900 mg of THC. To get a 1 mg THC dose, you need only 1.1 to 1.7 mg of concentrate.
That amount is too small to eyeball. A rice-grain dab can easily be 10 mg THC or more. So a low dose of concentrate often requires dilution or pre-dosed products.
Use a calibrated milligram scale that reads 0.001 grams. Weigh a tiny piece of concentrate. For 70% THC, 1.4 mg of concentrate gives 1 mg THC.
Another method is dilution. Mix 1 gram of concentrate with 9 grams of warm coconut oil. This makes a 10% strength blend. Then 10 mg of the blend equals about 1 mg THC if the concentrate is 100% THC. Adjust for actual potency.
Pre-dosed products are easier. Look for low-dose vape cartridges, microdose pens, or edibles made from distillate. These often list THC per puff or per piece.
Your low dose depends on tolerance, body weight, metabolism, and liver enzymes. People who use cannabis often may need more. New users may feel strong effects from 1 mg.
The product type also matters. Inhaled concentrates hit in seconds to minutes and last 1 to 3 hours. Edibles made from concentrate take 30 to 120 minutes and last 4 to 8 hours.
A low dose lowers the risk of anxiety, paranoia, and greenout. But no amount of cannabis is completely risk-free. Avoid driving or operating machinery after any dose.
Do not mix cannabis with alcohol or other drugs. People under 21, pregnant people, and those with a history of psychosis should avoid cannabis. Start with 1 mg THC and wait at least 15 minutes before taking more.
A low dose may feel like mild relaxation, a slight mood lift, or reduced tension. You should not feel heavily impaired. If you feel anxious or dizzy, you took too much.
Inhaled low doses last about 1 to 3 hours. Edible low doses can last 4 to 8 hours. Effects peak later with edibles, so do not redose too soon.
