The short answer
Nearly every licensed dispensary in the US will accept a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID that proves you are at least 21 years old. In practice that means a state driver's license, a state-issued ID card, a US passport or passport card, a military ID, or a tribal ID. Medical patients in many states can enter at 18 with a state medical cannabis card plus a matching photo ID.

If your ID is expired, torn, laminated over, or only shows a photo of your face with no birth date, expect to be turned away. Door staff are not being difficult. They lose their job and the shop loses its license if a sale goes to someone underage.

IDs accepted almost everywhere
- State-issued driver's license or non-driver ID card, current and not expired
- US passport or passport card
- US military ID (common access card or dependent ID)
- Tribal-issued photo ID from a federally recognized tribe
- Permanent resident card or other federal photo identification
Out-of-state IDs are usually fine for adult-use purchases. You do not have to be a resident to buy recreational cannabis in most legal states. Medical purchases are different, and I cover that below.

Medical patients under 21
States with medical programs typically allow patients at 18, and a few allow minors with a caregiver. The paperwork matters here. Bring your state medical cannabis card and a second government photo ID with the same name. Some states only honor their own medical cards, so an out-of-state patient may still need to buy as a 21+ recreational customer. Nevada and a handful of others offer reciprocity, but the rules change, so call ahead.

- Paper temporary IDs without a photo, depending on state law
- Photocopies, scans, or photos of an ID on your phone
- School IDs, work badges, gym cards, and membership cards
- Foreign driver's licenses at some shops, though foreign passports are often accepted
- Digital or mobile IDs, which only a few states and a few retailers support
Vertical licenses and expired-looking dates
A vertical layout license just means it was issued before you turned 21. If your birth date shows you are 21 now, it is valid. Budtenders may look twice because vertical IDs are the ones they see from underage buyers, so be patient and hand it over without a fuss.
Why dispensaries scan or copy IDs
Many point-of-sale systems swipe or scan your ID to verify the birth date and record the transaction. Some states require it. Ask what the shop retains if that concerns you. Reputable operators store the minimum the law demands and do not sell the data.
Before you go
- Check the expiration date and the condition of your card.
- Bring a backup form of ID if you have one.
- Confirm your name matches on your medical card and ID.
- Call the shop if you are using anything unusual, like a passport or a tribal ID.
One more thing. Nobody under 21 gets in, period, even if they are just standing near the door with a friend. Leave the younger sibling in the car.
