Limonene is a monoterpene that gives cannabis a lemon or orange smell, and it is one of the few cannabis terpenes with a real pile of lab research behind it. In the plant, it helps fight off pests and microbes. Inhaled, it reaches the bloodstream fast and gets broken down in the liver. It will not get you high on its own. What it may do is shape how a strain smells, tastes, and feels.
Cannabis makes limonene in the same tiny glandular hairs, called trichomes, that produce THC and CBD. The plant appears to use it as a defense: it is toxic to some insects and fungi, and its scent can draw or repel other organisms. Levels swing a lot between cultivars. Two plants that look identical can test anywhere from a trace to a couple percent of total terpene weight.
Limonene is also fragile. Heat, light, and oxygen convert it into carvone over time, which is why older flower can smell minty or like caraway instead of fresh lemon.
Limonene for Inflammation in Cannabis: What the Research Shows
The boiling point sits near 176 °C (349 °F), which is why low-temperature dabs and vape settings around 160 to 190 °C tend to taste brighter. Terpenes come off earlier than most cannabinoids, so the first pulls carry more of the aroma.
This is where the entourage effect comes in. The idea is that terpenes and cannabinoids work together, and lab work has shown some terpenes can influence how cannabinoid receptors behave. Solid human evidence is still missing. THC does the intoxicating work; limonene does not bind to CB1 the way THC does.
Practically speaking, limonene-heavy flower tends to read as bright and alert rather than heavy. Some of that is pharmacology and some is expectation. Smell drives perception hard.
Limonene is a citrus monoterpene that flavors cannabis and may gently nudge mood, but it is not psychoactive by itself. The preclinical research is promising and the clinical research is not there yet. If you see dosing claims for anxiety, treat them as unproven.
