Short answer

A good first tincture dose is 1 to 2.5 mg of THC. That is a quarter of the 10 mg serving printed on a lot of packaging, and for plenty of people it is still enough. Take it, wait two hours, and judge from there. Nothing about a tincture rewards rushing.

Why tinctures catch beginners off guard

Onset depends on how you take it. Hold the liquid under your tongue for a minute or two and effects usually show up in 15 to 45 minutes. Swallow it right away and you are basically eating an edible, which means a one to two hour wait and a stronger, longer ride. Either way the peak can land after you have decided nothing is happening and taken a second dose. That second dose is how most rough first nights start.

Alcohol-based tinctures tend to hit a little faster than oil-based ones. Glycerin tinctures can feel slower to some people. Same label, different felt effect.

Dropper math, in plain numbers

Ignore the dropper size until you read the label. What matters is total THC and bottle volume.

Some labels list mg per mL, others list mg per dropper. I check both before squeezing anything out, because a 15 mL bottle at 300 mg works out to 20 mg per mL, double the strength of the 30 mL version.

A starter schedule that works

  1. Pick an evening with nowhere to drive.
  2. Take 1 to 2.5 mg under the tongue.
  3. Wait two full hours. Eat something if you dosed on an empty stomach.
  4. Feel nothing? Repeat the same dose another day before raising it.
  5. If you liked it, add 1 to 2.5 mg per session, never per hour.
  6. Write down dose, time, and how you felt. Your notes beat any general rule.

What shifts your number

If you take prescription medication or have liver concerns, ask a pharmacist. Tincture dosing is not worth guessing at.

If you overshoot

Dry mouth, a racing pulse, and a wave of "I have made a mistake" are the usual signs. It is uncomfortable and it is not the emergency your head says it is. Drink water, lie down, put on something calm, and remind yourself that it fades over a few hours. Some people find black pepper or a CBD tincture takes the edge off. Do not drive, and do not take more of anything to fix it.

Finding your own dose

Most beginners settle between 2.5 and 5 mg. A few feel plenty at 1 mg. Heavy users go higher, but that is tolerance talking, not a target. Start at the bottom, move in small steps, and let a few sessions tell you what your number is. There is no prize for getting there faster.
