Cannabis eases anxiety for some people and triggers it in others. Here is what the research shows, who is most at risk, and how to lower the risk.

What THCA is
THCA is tetrahydrocannabinolic acid. It is the acid form of THC in fresh cannabis. THCA binds to cannabinoid receptors with low affinity, so it does not cause the intoxicating effect tied to delta-9 THC. Heat removes a carboxyl group from THCA. The reaction is decarboxylation. It converts THCA to delta-9 THC. Smoking, vaping, dabbing, and baking all supply that heat.
Who sells THCA flower
Licensed dispensaries
Dispensaries in adult-use states sell cannabis flower tested for THC and THCA. Age is 21 in adult-use states. Medical-only states require a patient card, and flower may not be on the menu.
Hemp retailers
Hemp shops sell THCA flower as a farm bill product. Many ship to most states. Some sell inside state lines only. The product comes from licensed hemp farms and carries a lab report. A state can still block delivery to its addresses.
Read the label before you pay
- Delta-9 THC percent by dry weight. Hemp tops out at 0.3%.
- THCA percent or milligrams, listed on its own line.
- Total THC, if your state uses that metric. Total THC is delta-9 THC plus THCA times 0.877.
- Batch number, test date, and lab name.
- Harvest date and farm or state of origin.
Ask for the certificate of analysis (COA). A COA should match the batch you buy, not a different batch. Testing labs should hold DEA registration or a state hemp certification.
Potency and price
Listed THCA flower runs about 15% to 30% THCA by weight. An eighth, 3.5 grams, at 20% THCA holds about 700 mg of THCA. Full decarboxylation leaves about 614 mg of delta-9 THC. Inhaled dose lands below that number because some material burns off. Prices vary by state, weight, and harvest. Eighths often list near $25 to $60. Ounces often list near $120 to $300. Confirm current stock with the seller.
State law
The 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp from the Controlled Substances Act. Hemp is defined by delta-9 THC at 0.3% or less on a dry weight basis. THCA is not named in that definition. Some states count THCA when they test. A few states ban THCA flower outright. Penalties for a controlled substance can apply. Read your state statute or call your state agriculture department. Federal hemp policy has shifted since 2024, so confirm the current position before you order.

Storage and use
Store flower in a sealed glass jar away from light and heat. Heat converts THCA to THC, so do not leave a jar in a car. A kitchen oven at 240 F for 30 to 40 minutes will decarboxylate most flower, though exact times shift with moisture. Doses are hard to measure from raw flower. Start with a small amount, wait 15 minutes, then decide.
