Find two numbers on the label: THC per serving and total THC in the package. Divide the total by the number of servings to check the math. In most US adult-use states, one serving is 10 mg THC and a full package is capped at 100 mg. A 100 mg package that holds 10 gummies is 10 mg per gummy. A 100 mg chocolate bar scored into 20 squares is 5 mg per square.
The numbers printed on the label
- Total THC: milligrams of THC in the whole package.
- THC per serving: milligrams in one serving.
- Servings per package: how many servings the package holds.
- Serving size: weight or count. One serving may be a single gummy or a fraction of a bar.
- Total CBD and CBD per serving: listed as its own line on most labels.
- Other cannabinoids: CBN, CBG, THCV when the lab tested for them.
Check the math
Example: a package states 100 mg total THC, 10 servings, 10 mg per serving, serving size 1 gummy. The label is consistent. Example: a package states 100 mg total THC and 5 gummies, but prints 5 mg per serving. That implies 20 servings. One of the numbers is wrong. Treat the higher number as the safe estimate.
Some labels list mg per gram for chocolate and baked goods. Multiply mg per gram by the weight of the piece you eat. A 5 g square from a bar labeled 2 mg per gram is 10 mg THC.
State-mandated label elements
States with legal adult-use markets require specific items. Common items:

- Universal symbol for THC.
- License or registration number of the producer.
- Batch or lot number.
- Manufacture and expiration dates.
- Warning about impairment, driving, and use by minors.
- Statement that the product is not evaluated by the FDA where that applies.
- Poison control phone number in some states.
- Lab test results, often through a QR code.
Delta-8, hemp-derived THC, and label accuracy
Hemp-derived THC products sit outside state cannabis testing systems in many places. The FDA has warned that some delta-8 THC labels do not list delta-8 or list amounts that do not match test results. Independent lab tests of hemp-derived gummies have found THC content above and below the printed number. If a package has no batch number, no lab result, and no total THC figure, the label gives you nothing to dose with.
Dosing reference
10 mg is a standard serving, not a starting dose. Public health agencies in several states advise new users to start at 2.5 mg or less and wait. Swallowed THC takes 30 to 120 minutes to produce effects and can last 4 to 6 hours. The peak arrives later than with inhaled THC. Eating more before the first hour passes is the most common cause of a bad experience.
What the label does not tell you
- Your own tolerance. Body weight, liver enzymes, and prior use change the response.
- Food in your stomach. A full meal slows absorption.
- Storage history. THC degrades with heat and light, so an old package may test lower than the printed number.
- Interaction with alcohol, sedatives, or prescription drugs.
If a label is missing total THC, serving count, or a batch number, the dose cannot be calculated.
