The short answer

For shatter, aim for 450°F to 500°F. That is the range I land in almost every time. If flavor matters more than lung volume, drop to about 420°F to 460°F. If you want the biggest hit you can take without torching your throat, 480°F to 520°F is the ceiling before things go wrong.

You do not need a lab-grade thermometer to get there, but it helps. Most people who complain that shatter tastes harsh are dabbing somewhere north of 600°F and do not know it.

Why shatter wants a different temperature than rosin

Shatter is a stripped-down product. The extraction and purge process leaves behind a brittle, glassy slab that is mostly cannabinoids, with very little of the terpenes that give live resin and rosin their smell. That matters for temperature because terpenes are fragile. They start boiling off and degrading in the 310°F to 400°F range.

With rosin or live resin, pushing heat high costs you the whole point of the product. With shatter, you are mostly chasing THC and other cannabinoids, so a slightly hotter nail does less damage to the experience. THC vaporizes around 315°F, but vaporization point is not the same as dabbing temperature. You need enough heat to flash the oil into vapor fast instead of letting it slowly melt into a puddle.

Temperature ranges that actually matter

The cold start method

If you use a quartz banger and a torch, cold starts take most of the guesswork out of it.

  1. Drop your shatter into a room-temperature banger.
  2. Cap it with a carb cap.
  3. Apply the torch to the bottom of the banger, moving it around. Watch through the glass.
  4. When the shatter melts, bubbles, and starts throwing visible vapor, stop heating. That is usually 3 to 5 seconds on a clean banger.
  5. Inhale slow and steady. A hard pull cools the banger faster and wastes the dab.

Cold starts run cooler than timed hot starts, so expect a flavor-forward hit with a bit more oil left over. Reheat in one-second bursts if you want to finish it.

Reading your banger without a thermometer

The glow test is the one people get wrong most often. If your quartz is glowing orange or red, you are somewhere around 900°F or higher. Put the torch down and wait. Once the glow fades completely, give it another 20 to 30 seconds for a standard 25mm banger, then go.

Another tell is the puddle. A good shatter dab leaves a golden to light amber residue you can swab out. Dark brown or black residue that refuses to wipe clean means you were too hot. A fat puddle of unvaped oil sliding up the walls means you were too cold.

Signs you overshot or undershot

Too hot: instant harshness on the first pull, a burning sensation in the sinuses, coughing that lasts longer than the high takes to arrive, and black reclaim. Too cold: weak vapor, a large leftover puddle, and a dab that feels like it barely did anything. Adjust by 20°F to 30°F at a time, not by 100.

Device settings if you use an e-rig

On an e-nail or a Puffco-style device, set shatter between 450°F and 500°F and run a normal-length cycle. Start at 470°F, then move up or down depending on how your lungs and your batch respond. Every slab is a little different, and older shatter that has absorbed moisture will behave differently than a fresh pull.

Keep it shatter, not sap

Shatter is hygroscopic, meaning it pulls moisture out of the air. Leave it on parchment on a counter in a humid room and it turns sticky and sappy within a week or two. Store it in parchment inside an airtight glass jar, in a cool dark place. If you refrigerate it, let the jar come to room temperature before you open it so condensation does not form on the slab.
