Myrcene is a monoterpene, the most abundant one in most cannabis flower. It does not act like THC or CBD because it does not bind directly to CB1 or CB2 receptors. Instead it works through cell membranes, TRPV1 pain receptors, and by changing how easily other compounds cross into the brain. At high levels it lines up with relaxing, heavy-bodied effects that many people call couch lock. At low levels you may not notice it at all. When you buy, do not chase the word myrcene on a label. Chase the terpene panel on a batch-specific certificate of analysis (COA), then read the percentage next to the name. A flower with myrcene as its top terpene at roughly 0.5% to 1.5% by dry weight is a realistic target. Anything claiming myrcene dominance without a current lab report is guesswork.
Myrcene (sometimes written as beta-myrcene) is a small, oily molecule built from ten carbons. It shows up in hops, lemongrass, thyme, bay leaf, and mango, which is why cannabis flower can smell earthy, musky, and slightly fruity at the same time. It is volatile, meaning it evaporates, and its boiling point sits near 167 degrees Celsius or about 334 degrees Fahrenheit. That number matters if you vape or cook, because heat below that point releases less of it. Myrcene is fat soluble, so it settles into cell membranes and can change their fluidity. This is one proposed route for the entourage effect, the idea that terpenes help cannabinoids absorb and act more efficiently. Myrcene also interacts with TRPV1, the same receptor capsaicin hits, which is one reason animal studies show analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity. Separately, myrcene appears in rodent studies to prolong sleep time caused by other sedatives, which supports the sleepy reputation without proving it works the same way in humans.
