A marijuana wax vape pen is a battery-powered device that heats cannabis extract until it turns to vapor. The extract, called wax, holds 60% to 90% THC in lab-tested products. A wax pen needs more power than a cartridge pen because wax is thick and solid at room temperature. Most units fire at 3.2 volts to 4.2 volts.
What wax is
Wax is a cannabis concentrate. Producers strip plant matter from flower with a solvent. Common solvents: butane, propane, ethanol, carbon dioxide. THC content lands between 60% and 90% by weight. Flower sits at 15% to 25%.
Wax has a soft, opaque texture. It bends and smears. Other concentrates run harder: shatter snaps, budder creams. Labs name wax by texture and process, not by chemistry.
How a wax pen works
Three parts: battery, atomizer, mouthpiece. The battery sends current to a coil. The coil heats the wax past its vaporization point. Vapor forms and exits through the mouthpiece.
Voltage
Cannabinoids in wax vaporize between 315°F and 465°F. THC boils near 315°F. Terpenes vaporize below that, from 310°F to 400°F. Most wax pens use 3.2 volts to 4.2 volts. Low settings keep terpenes intact. High settings give thicker vapor and a harsher draw.
Atomizer types
- Dual quartz rod coils: heat fast, run hot.
- Ceramic donut coils: even heat, less scorching.
- Ceramic cup or bucket: no direct coil contact, easier to clean.
Dose
One hit from a wax pen delivers more THC than one hit of flower. Vapor reaches the bloodstream in 2 to 10 minutes. Wait 10 minutes between hits to judge the effect.
New users start with a rice-grain amount. Rough math: 1 gram of wax at 70% THC holds 700 mg THC. A 10 mg dose equals about 14 mg of wax.
Legal status
Federal law lists THC in Schedule I. State law varies. As of 2024, 24 states and the District of Columbia allowed adult use, and 38 states ran medical programs. Check the state, not the product label.
Safety
The CDC investigated an outbreak of lung injury it named EVALI. The agency counted 2,807 hospital cases and 68 deaths by February 2020. Lab tests found vitamin E acetate in 51 of 51 patient samples across 25 states. Vitamin E acetate is a thickener added to unregulated THC cartridges. It is not a wax ingredient.
Regulated products carry lab reports for potency, pesticides, residual solvents, and heavy metals. Unregulated products do not. No test report, no purchase.
Storage
Wax turns sticky at warm room temperature. Store it in glass or in the pen chamber. Silicone pulls terpenes out of wax and shifts flavor over weeks. Keep the pen upright. Heat above 90°F makes wax run into the airway.
Maintenance
Wax leaves residue. Clean the chamber with 91% isopropyl alcohol after each gram. Scrape with the tool that came with the pen. Replace coils every 1 to 3 grams, or when vapor tastes burnt.
What a wax pen is not
A wax pen is not a cartridge pen. A cartridge pen holds liquid distillate and runs at 2.8 volts to 3.6 volts. A 510-thread battery with a wax atomizer is a separate device. Cartridges screw on. Wax does not.
