Carbon weight matters more than fan speed. A unit with 5 to 15 pounds of carbon lasts longer than a thin pad. Carbon saturates. Replace it every 3 to 6 months in a room with daily smoking.

Use this formula: CFM = (room volume in cubic feet x air changes per hour) / 60. Smoke needs 8 to 12 air changes per hour. A 12 by 12 by 8 foot room is 1,152 cubic feet. At 10 ACH, that is 192 CFM. Run the unit on high while smoking, then on low. A carbon filter and inline fan combo is a common option. A 4 inch fan moves about 190 CFM. A 6 inch fan moves about 400 CFM.
Put the air cleaner near the source, not across the room. Smoke rises. An intake at floor level and a return at head height works better than a single low vent. Keep the unit 6 inches from walls. Do not block the intake.
Air cleaners do not replace ventilation. Open a window or run an exhaust fan. EPA states ozone generators produce ozone at levels that harm lungs, and they do not remove odor at safe ozone levels. Skip them. Air cleaners also do not remove all resin from vapor. Resin coats prefilters and fans. Wipe surfaces and wash prefilters every month.
