Target Humidity

Store cannabis flower at 58% to 62% relative humidity (RH). This range keeps water activity (aw) between 0.55 and 0.65 aw. Water activity measures free water in the plant material. ASTM D8197 sets a water activity range of 0.55 to 0.65 aw for cannabis flower during storage. The standard exists for microbiological control. A jar at 62% RH will bring flower to about 0.60 to 0.65 aw after 24 to 48 hours. A hygrometer reads air humidity. A water activity meter reads the flower.

Temperature

Keep jars at 60°F to 70°F (15°C to 21°C). Heat speeds decarboxylation and oxidation. A 10°F rise can double reaction rates. Do not store cannabis in a car, near a heater, or on a windowsill. Light and Air

Step by Step Storage

1. Dry flower to 10% to 12% moisture content. Stems snap, not bend.
2. Place flower in an airtight glass jar. Leave 25% headspace.
3. Add a humidity pack sized for the jar. An 8 g pack covers up to 1 oz (28 g). A 67 g pack covers up to 1 lb (450 g).
4. Close the lid. Store in a dark cabinet at 60°F to 70°F.

Measure and Calibrate

Use a digital hygrometer. Calibrate it with a salt test. Mix 1/2 cup of table salt with 1/4 cup of water. Put the mix and the hygrometer in a sealed bag. Wait 8 to 12 hours. The reading should be 75% RH. If the reading is 72%, add 3 points to every future reading. Replace hygrometers every 12 months. Low cost units drift.

Shelf Life
