How to Use a Torch Lighter for Cannabis

A torch lighter heats a quartz banger or titanium nail to a set temperature so cannabis concentrate vaporizes instead of burning. The full process takes about 30 to 45 seconds. You need a torch lighter, butane, a dab rig, a carb cap, a dab tool, and your concentrate. Work in a room with airflow and no flammable items nearby.

Prerequisites

Steps

  1. Place the dab rig on a heat-resistant mat. Keep the torch upright.
  2. Check the butane level. Refill if the torch sputters or the flame is weak.
  3. Turn the flame adjustment wheel to a medium-low setting. A flame longer than two inches wastes fuel and heats too fast.
  4. Hold the torch 1 to 2 inches from the banger. Aim the inner blue flame at the bottom of the banger.
  5. Move the flame in a small circle around the banger for 15 to 20 seconds. Do not hold it in one spot.
  6. Stop heating when the banger glows a faint red, or when an infrared thermometer reads 550°F to 600°F.
  7. Set the torch down with the flame off. Let the banger cool for 30 to 60 seconds.
  8. Touch the dab tool to the concentrate. Pick up a rice-grain-sized amount.
  9. Wait until the banger reaches 350°F to 450°F. Use an infrared thermometer or time the cool-down.
  10. Drop the concentrate into the banger. Place the carb cap on top.
  11. Inhale through the rig mouthpiece at a steady pace. Do not pull hard.
  12. Exhale. Clean the banger with a cotton swab while it is still warm.

Troubleshooting

If the torch will not stay lit, bleed the air from the tank and refill with refined butane. If the dab tastes burnt, your banger was too hot. Wait longer before applying concentrate. If the vapor is thin, you may need a higher temperature or a better carb cap seal.
