How to Use a Bong Step by Step

A bong pulls smoke through water before it reaches your mouth. The process: fill the base with water, grind the cannabis, pack the bowl, light the bowl, inhale, pull the bowl out, exhale. The full sequence takes about 30 seconds.

What You Need

Step 1: Add Water

Fill the base until the water sits 1 to 2 inches above the bottom of the downstem. Too little water makes the smoke hot. Too much water pulls into your mouth. Test the draw with no cannabis in the bowl. The pull should feel easy.

Step 2: Grind the Cannabis

Break the flower into pieces 2 mm to 4 mm wide. A grinder gives an even pack. Whole nugs burn on the outside and stay green inside.

Step 3: Pack the Bowl

Fill the bowl 50 to 75 percent. Tamp it with a finger. Leave space at the top so air moves through the material. A tight pack blocks airflow and wastes flower.

Step 4: Light and Inhale

Put your mouth on the mouthpiece. Hold the flame at the edge of the bowl, not the center. Pull air through the bong for 3 to 5 seconds. The flame moves down as you inhale. Smoke collects in the tube.

Step 5: Clear the Chamber

Lift the bowl piece out of the downstem. Air rushes in and pushes the smoke into your lungs. This is the clear. Inhale the rest of the smoke, then breathe out.

Step 6: Exhale and Check

Exhale after 2 to 3 seconds. Holding smoke does not raise the effect, and it irritates the lungs. Wait 10 minutes before you pack a second bowl.

Cleaning

Change the water every session. Residue builds in the tube and changes the taste. Clean the bong every 3 to 5 uses. Pour in 91 percent isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt, cover the openings, shake for 60 seconds, then rinse with warm water.

Safety and Law

Bong smoke carries tar and irritants. Water cools the smoke but does not remove all of these compounds. Cannabis rules differ by state. Check the age limit, the possession limit, and the places where use is allowed before you buy. Keep glass out of reach of children and pets.
