The short answer

Grind the flower, fill the bowl loosely to just below the rim, tamp it down with light pressure, and light the edge instead of the center. That is the whole technique. A good pack pulls easily, burns evenly, and does not torch half the material on the first spark.

Most people pack too tight. Air needs to move through the material, and a dense brick of ground bud will clog the screen or hole and leave you pulling hard for almost nothing.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Grind it. Aim for a medium consistency. If you can see whole chunks poking out, keep going. If it turns to powder, you have gone too far and it will pull through the hole.
  2. Check the airflow. Before you load anything, make sure the hole in the bowl is clear. A quick poke with a poker saves a lot of frustration later.
  3. Fill it loose. Sprinkle the ground flower in until it sits just below the rim. Do not press while you fill. Let it settle naturally.
  4. Tamp gently. Press down with your finger or the flat end of a lighter, just enough that the surface is level. You want a slight spring when you touch it, not a solid puck.
  5. Test the draw. Put your mouth on the pipe and inhale without lighting it. Air should move freely. If it feels tight, loosen the pack with your poker and try again.
  6. Light the edge. Hold the flame to the side of the bowl and let it draw the fire in. You want to ignite a small corner, not the whole top. This gives you better flavor and more control.

How much should you pack?

That depends on what you want out of it. A full bowl is for a session, a group, or someone with a high tolerance. A partial bowl is smarter when you are exploring a new strain or want to stay sharp.

Cornering a bowl

Cornering means lighting only one small section of the herb and letting the rest sit untouched. You come back for the other corners later. The smoke stays cooler and tastes better because you are not scorching everything at once. It also lets you stop whenever you want instead of feeling like you have to finish what you packed.

Snapping a bowl

If you use a water pipe with a slide, you can pack a full bowl, light it, and pull the slide out at the end to clear the chamber. That is usually called snapping it. It is efficient, but you use the entire bowl in one go, so pack accordingly.

Mistakes I see all the time

Keeping it clean

I clean my pieces every week or so. Empty the ash while it is still dry, then soak the glass in isopropyl alcohol with a little coarse salt, shake it, rinse with hot water, and let it air dry. A clean pipe tastes better and hits smoother, which means you actually get more out of the flower you paid for.

One thing to keep in mind

Smoke is irritant. Inhaling combusted plant material, cannabis included, exposes your lungs to tar and carbon monoxide, and THC levels in today's flower are much higher than they were a few decades ago. If you are new to this, pack a small bowl, take one hit, and wait ten minutes before deciding you want more. Go slow at first and you will have a much better time.

Also check your local laws. Rules on cannabis possession and use vary widely by state, and it is still illegal under federal law. Know where you stand before you light up.
