The short answer
A full spectrum CBD tincture for dogs is a hemp extract that keeps everything the plant makes: CBD, minor cannabinoids like CBG and CBC, terpenes, flavonoids, and a small amount of THC, capped at 0.3% on a dry weight basis under US federal hemp law. That trace THC is the main thing separating full spectrum from the broad spectrum and isolate versions sold for pets. It is also why full spectrum deserves a slower approach with a dog than it does with a person.

A reasonable starting dose is 0.1 to 0.25 mg of CBD per pound of body weight, once or twice a day, given with a bite of fatty food. Hold that amount for five to seven days and watch. If your dog seems unchanged and is handling it well, step up in small increments. Research doses for arthritis and seizures have run closer to 1 mg per pound twice daily, but those were given under veterinary supervision, not measured out at home with a dropper and a guess.

Full spectrum vs broad spectrum vs isolate
Isolate is pure CBD with the rest of the plant stripped out. Broad spectrum keeps the minor cannabinoids and terpenes but removes THC. Full spectrum keeps all of it, THC included. The popular claim is that the full plant extract works better than isolated CBD, an idea called the entourage effect. In dogs, that idea is mostly theory right now. The few controlled canine studies used specific formulations, not a head-to-head comparison of the three types. So the honest answer is that full spectrum may offer an edge, and it definitely offers more risk to manage.
How to give it
- Read the label for total CBD and bottle volume, then do the math. A 30 mL bottle with 1000 mg of CBD holds about 33 mg per mL.
- Use the dropper markings, not drop counts. Drop size varies by liquid thickness and dropper tip.
- Drizzle it on a small amount of wet food, or place it in the cheek pouch if your dog is fussy.
- Give it with food that contains some fat. CBD is fat soluble and absorbs poorly on an empty stomach.
- Keep a log. Date, dose, time, and what you noticed. Patterns show up faster on paper than in memory.
What the evidence shows
Canine CBD research is young. Small trials have looked at pain from osteoarthritis and at seizure frequency in dogs already on anticonvulsants, and some owners reported improvement. Nothing here is a cure, and the FDA has not approved CBD for any animal use. It is also currently illegal to put CBD into animal food or animal feed in the US, which is why pet tinctures are sold as supplements rather than treats or meals.
THC risk in dogs
Dogs have far more cannabinoid receptors in the brain than humans do, and they process THC differently. Trace amounts from a full spectrum tincture at a normal dose are usually tolerated, but potency varies between bottles and a curious dog who finds a human edible is a different situation entirely. Signs of THC toxicity include wobbliness, heavy lethargy, dilated pupils, vomiting, dribbling urine, head tremors, and in serious cases a slow heart rate, low body temperature, or seizures. Symptoms often start within 30 to 90 minutes and can run a day or longer with edible products. Call your vet or an animal poison hotline right away if you see them. Never share human THC gummies, vape carts, or flower with a dog.
What to check on the label
I look for a batch-specific certificate of analysis from an independent lab, with cannabinoid potency and a pass on pesticides, heavy metals, and solvents. Then I check the carrier oil, usually MCT or hemp seed oil. Hemp seed oil alone contains almost no cannabinoids, so if it is the only oil listed and no CBD number appears, skip it. Watch for sweeteners and flavors. Xylitol, also called birch sugar, is severely toxic to dogs and shows up in some human tinctures. Chocolate mint is another one to leave on the shelf. And avoid any product that does not state mg of CBD per mL in plain numbers.
Storage and daily handling
Keep the bottle cool, dark, and out of reach. CBD degrades with heat and light, and a tincture that sits on a sunny windowsill loses potency. Cap it tight, store it upright, and check the label for a discard date. If the oil smells rancid or has changed color, toss it.
When to call your vet first
Talk to your vet before starting, especially if your dog takes phenobarbital, clobazam, or any drug processed through the liver. CBD competes for some of the same liver enzymes, so it can shift blood levels of other medications. Studies in dogs have also shown rising alkaline phosphatase on bloodwork at higher doses. A baseline panel and a recheck a few weeks in is cheap insurance. Skip CBD and get medical care if your dog is vomiting, off food, limping badly, or having a seizure for the first time. A tincture is not a substitute for a diagnosis.
