The entourage effect is the claim that cannabinoids and terpenes in cannabis change each other's effects. CBG, or cannabigerol, is one of those compounds. CBG does not cause intoxication. Raphael Mechoulam and Shimon Ben-Shabat used the phrase 'entourage effect' in a 1998 paper in the European Journal of Pharmacology. CBGA is the parent molecule. Plant enzymes convert CBGA into THCA, CBDA, and CBCA. CBG is what remains when CBGA is decarboxylated and not converted downstream. Most cultivars convert almost all CBGA, so CBG stays under 1%. Cultivars bred with blocked enzymes can test above 10% CBG in dried flower.

CBG binds CB1 and CB2 receptors with low affinity. Published reviews report it as a CB1 antagonist and a CB2 partial agonist. It also acts at alpha-2 adrenergic receptors and 5-HT1A receptors. In lab assays it blocks anandamide reuptake and GABA uptake. These findings come from isolated cells, not from people.

Two mechanisms get proposed. First, CBG could occupy CB1 receptors and reduce THC binding at those sites. Second, CBG could raise anandamide levels by slowing reuptake. Both ideas predict a change in the THC experience. Neither has been tested in a controlled human trial that isolates CBG.

Terpenes and other compounds

Terpenes such as myrcene, limonene, pinene, linalool, and beta-caryophyllene make up 0.05% to 3% of dried flower weight. That is far below cannabinoid levels. Beta-caryophyllene binds CB2 receptors, which gives it a receptor target. Other terpenes have no confirmed receptor path at common doses.

What the evidence supports

Whole-plant extracts differ from isolated THC in some studies. Those studies change several compounds at once, so no single molecule can take credit. No human study has shown that CBG changes the effect of THC in a measurable way.

Reading a CBG label

Total CBG equals CBGA multiplied by 0.878, plus CBG. Total THC equals THCA multiplied by 0.877, plus THC. A certificate of analysis from an ISO 17025 lab lists both numbers. A product that claims an 'entourage effect' with no COA gives you nothing to check.

Dosing

Human CBG pharmacokinetics are not well characterized. Animal studies use a wide range of doses. Commercial CBG products list 10 mg to 50 mg per serving. No clinical trial sets a standard dose.
