What Dry Sift Is
Dry sift is resin and trichome heads knocked off dried cannabis and sorted through screens. No water. No solvent. No heat. Screen stacks run from 60 micron to 220 micron. The common press range is what falls through a 73 to 160 micron screen. Sift under 60 micron holds heads with little stalk and leaf. Glandular trichome heads measure about 50 to 100 microns across.
Grade and Press Results
Grade tracks plant matter. A full melt sift leaves little residue on a nail. Head-only sift presses into translucent rosin. Sift with leaf and stalk presses into a darker, waxier product. Grading scales vary by producer. Numbers are not standardized.
- 5 to 6 star: heads only, low residue, press at 170 to 180 F
- 3 to 4 star: some plant matter, press at 180 to 200 F
- 1 to 2 star: high plant matter, low yield, dark rosin
Press Settings for Dry Sift
- Set plates to 170 to 200 F. Sift needs less heat than flower.
- Load 3 to 7 grams into a 25 or 37 micron bag.
- Fold the open end and place the bag in a second bag or a parchment sleeve.
- Apply light pressure for 20 to 30 seconds. This warms the sift.
- Ramp to 500 to 1000 psi at the bag. Hold 30 to 60 seconds.
- Pull the parchment and cool the rosin for 5 to 10 minutes before collection.
Pressure at the bag depends on plate size and ram force. A 3x5 inch plate at 1 ton gives about 130 psi at the bag. Check the math for your press before you load a bag.
Bag Size and Packing
Sift is a fine powder. It passes through 90 and 120 micron bags. A 25 micron bag holds the powder and blocks plant matter. Double bagging adds a second wall against blowouts. Fill the bag to about two thirds. Leave room at the open end for a fold. A packed bag with no slack tears at the seam.
Moisture
Press sift at 45 to 55 percent relative humidity. Dry sift turns to dust and blows out of the bag. Wet sift makes steam and pushes water into the rosin. Store sift in glass with a humidity pack for 24 hours before pressing if the room is dry.
Yield Numbers
Expect 40 to 70 percent return from 5 to 6 star sift. Expect 25 to 45 percent from 3 to 4 star sift. First press leaves 20 to 40 percent of the resin in the bag. A second press at higher heat adds a few points and drops the color grade.
Common Problems
- Blowout: too much pressure at the start, or a bag under 25 micron with no slack
- Dark rosin: plate temp above 200 F, or sift with heavy plant matter
- Low yield: sift above 160 micron, or sift held at low humidity
- Sticky bag: press time over 90 seconds at high heat
Storage
Store dry sift and rosin in glass at 60 to 65 F, away from light. Rosin from sift can budder in 1 to 3 days at room temp. Cold cure at 50 to 60 F for 3 to 7 days holds a stable texture. Rules for sift and rosin differ by state. Check local law.
