What "delta" means in cannabis

Delta is a chemistry term for the position of a double bond on the THC molecule. Delta-9 THC is the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis. Delta-8 THC carries that same double bond one carbon earlier on the ring, and delta-10 THC carries it in the tenth position. The shift changes how each compound binds CB1 receptors, which is why delta-8 feels milder than delta-9 for most people and delta-10 is reported as more stimulating. All three occur naturally in cannabis, but delta-8 and delta-10 appear at very low levels in the raw plant. Most delta-8 sold in the US is synthesized from CBD.

Delta-9 THC

Delta-9 is the benchmark. It is the compound behind the classic cannabis high, and it is the molecule tested for in standard THC potency panels. Flower, vapes, edibles, and concentrates are usually labeled by total delta-9 THC content, with some testing labs also reporting THCA, the acidic precursor that converts to delta-9 when heated. Effects typically include euphoria, appetite stimulation, and reduced pain perception. Onset runs from seconds when inhaled to 30 to 90 minutes when eaten.

Delta-8 THC

Delta-8 THC is psychoactive but less potent than delta-9 at the same dose. Users commonly describe it as clearer, with less anxiety and less sedation. It binds CB1 receptors with lower affinity, which explains the weaker intensity. Federal law treats intoxicating hemp-derived cannabinoids as a gray area, and several states have banned delta-8 outright while others regulate it like adult-use cannabis.

Delta-10 THC

Delta-10 is the newest of the three in the retail market and the least studied. Early user reports point to an energizing, focus-oriented effect with minimal body heaviness. Supply is limited because yields from synthesis are low, so delta-10 products cost more and are more often cut with other cannabinoids.

How to buy a delta product

Before ordering, check your state law, your payment options, and the return policy of the shop.

  1. Confirm delta-8 or delta-10 is legal to sell and possess in your state.
  2. Read the certificate of analysis and verify the lab is ISO 17025 accredited.
  3. Check the heavy metals, residual solvent, and pesticide panels, not just potency.
  4. Compare total cannabinoid milligrams per serving against the label claim.
  5. Start with a 5 to 10 mg dose and wait two hours before redosing.
  6. Store the product away from heat and direct light in the original packaging.

Dosing and effects

Delta-9 doses of 10 mg are typical for casual users. Delta-8 needs roughly 1.5 to 2 times that amount for a comparable effect, and delta-10 falls somewhere between. Edibles hit harder than vapes because the liver converts THC into 11-hydroxy-THC, a more potent metabolite. Inhaled effects peak within 10 to 30 minutes. Oral effects can last six hours or longer.

Safety and testing

Delta-8 products made through chemical conversion can carry residual solvents, acids, or catalyst byproducts if the manufacturer does not purify the batch. Unregulated synthetics sold as delta-8 have been linked to hospitalizations in several states. A full-panel lab test is the only way to confirm what is in the bottle.
