CBD Isolate vs Broad Spectrum: Which Should You Buy?
Broad spectrum CBD wins for most buyers: extra cannabinoids and terpenes, fuller effects, and no THC when it is verified. Isolate wins on purity and price.
CBD crystalline is cannabidiol in its purest solid form, often 99% or higher by weight. It shows up as a white powder or small translucent shards, carries no smell or taste, and holds almost no THC. If you want CBD with nothing else attached to it, this is the version to look at.
In the hemp market, "crystalline" and "isolate" get used for the same product. Strictly speaking, crystalline is CBD that has been precipitated into a solid crystal, and that step pushes purity past 99%. On a lab report the THC line usually reads "not detected," or sits under 0.1%. Everything else from the plant, terpenes, flavonoids, CBG, CBN, is gone.
Raw hemp extract goes through a chain of steps to strip away anything that isn't CBD:
What's left is one molecule. That's the whole point, and also the main limitation.
Full-spectrum oil keeps the plant's minor cannabinoids and terpenes, which some people argue matters for the entourage effect. Crystalline gives you CBD alone, so you can dose it without any THC and add it to food, oil, or a vape mix without a hemp flavor coming along.
The tradeoff is real: no terpenes, no minor cannabinoids. If those are the reason you take CBD, isolate isn't your pick. If you want a clean, measurable dose and zero THC, it is.
One gram of crystalline equals roughly 1,000 mg of CBD. A common starting point is 5 to 10 mg, taken once and then adjusted after a few days. That dose is a tiny pinch of powder, so a milligram scale matters more here than with a tincture. Without one, you're guessing every time.
Plain oral CBD absorbs poorly. Human studies put bioavailability around 6%, which is why taking it with a fatty meal or dissolving it in oil first makes a noticeable difference.
The certificate of analysis comes first, and it has to match the batch number on the jar.
Powder that clumps hard, smells like solvents, or comes with no paperwork is a pass.
Keep it sealed, cool, dark, and dry. Moisture is the enemy because it makes the powder cake up. A silica packet in the jar helps. Stored that way, potency holds for a year or longer.
Hemp-derived CBD with no more than 0.3% THC is legal at the federal level in the US under the 2018 Farm Bill. State rules vary, and the FDA has not approved CBD as a dietary supplement ingredient. Check your own state before ordering.
