Voltage and the cartridge
Most 510-thread pens run from 2.5 volts to 4.8 volts. Distillate carts work at 3.3 to 3.8 volts. Live resin and rosin carts hold terpenes that vaporize near 310°F to 390°F, so 2.5 to 3.3 volts is the range in common use. Above 4.2 volts the coil runs hot. A hot coil degrades terpenes and can crack a ceramic core.
Oil carts measure 1.2 to 2.0 ohms. Lower resistance pulls more current from the cell. Ohm's law sets the draw: a 1.5 ohm cart at 3.7 volts pulls 2.5 amps and delivers about 9 watts. A pen with a 350 mAh cell empties faster at low resistance. A dry cart heats with no oil to absorb the energy. Prime a new cart with two short pulls before a long one.
Charging
- Use the cable and wall block the maker lists. Most pens take 5 volts at 0.5 to 1 amp.
- Charge on a hard, nonflammable surface. Keep the cell off fabric, paper, and carpet.
- Do not charge overnight or while you sleep.
- Do not charge in a car, in direct sun, or near a heater.
- Replace a cable with a cut jacket or a loose plug.
- Do not charge a cell below 32°F. Let it reach room temperature first.
Heat and storage
Lithium-ion cells lose capacity above 86°F (30°C). Thermal runaway risk rises above 140°F (60°C). A closed car in summer reaches 130°F to 170°F. Leave the pen at home. Store cells at 59°F to 77°F (15°C to 25°C). A cell held at 100 percent charge ages faster than one held at 50 percent.

Carry and handling
A loose cell shorts when metal touches both terminals. Carry spares in a plastic case. Keep keys and coins in a different pocket. A torn wrap exposes the shell. Retape the cell or recycle it. Do not stack cells in a bag with tools.
Damage and disposal
Signs of a failing cell: a bulge in the shell, a hiss, a sweet solvent smell, or heat while the device is off. Move it outdoors, away from anything that burns. Do not puncture or crush it. Take it to a household hazardous waste site or a retailer that collects lithium batteries. Do not put it in curbside trash.
