Cannabis Smalls vs Shake: Which One to Buy
Pick cannabis smalls for potency and trichomes; choose shake for cheap rolling volume. Compare weight, dryness, price, and best uses.
If two bags sit side by side and the price is close, I take smalls. They trim cleaner, carry less stem weight, and hold up longer in a jar. Popcorn is what I buy when the price is genuinely low and I plan to grind the whole bag into joints or butter. That is the honest split.
One warning before you shop: vendors use these words loosely. Some slap "popcorn" on flower that would be labeled smalls elsewhere. Size specs and trim quality tell you more than the label does.
Smalls are real buds that just ran small. Dime to nickel sized, dense, fully formed calyxes, and usually hand or carefully machine trimmed. They come from mid and lower branches or from secondary flower sites that got less light. Shape and structure look like normal flower, only scaled down.
Cannabis Smalls Quality Review: Best Value Flower Compared
Popcorn sits a rung lower on most grading sheets. Think pea to dime sized, looser, often larfy, with more sugar leaf and stem per gram. It tends to come from shaded lower growth that never filled out. Some of it is fine. Some of it is leafy material that should have gone to extraction.
Not much. THC and terpene levels track genetics, harvest timing, and cure far more than bud size. Upper colas on a plant often test a point or two higher than lower sites, but that gap is small next to the difference between a well grown and a rushed harvest. Small buds also have more surface area per gram, so trichome coverage can look heavy in a close-up. Size is a weak predictor of how high you get.
Buy popcorn and save the cash. You are grinding it anyway, and structure stops mattering once it is in paper. Pick a strain with a loud nose so the flavor survives the burn.
Go with smalls, ideally hand trimmed, single strain, and recent harvest. Vapor carries terpenes straight to your palate, so leafy material tastes like hay. This is where the extra few dollars per eighth earns its keep.
Popcorn or trim-grade flower works fine. Decarboxylation and a fat or alcohol extraction flatten out the texture differences. Spend your money on quantity, not bag appeal.
Smalls are the better default for smoking and vaping. Popcorn earns its place when the discount is real and you plan to grind, roll, or cook it. Ignore the marketing words, check the size spec, trim, moisture, and date, then do the per-gram math. That math decides it every time.
