Quick answer
Cannabis rolling papers are thin sheets of plant fiber used to wrap ground flower into a smokable joint. Most papers are made from wood pulp, rice, hemp, or flax. They are sold by size (Single Wide, 1¼, King Size, King Size Slim) and by weight, measured in grams per square meter. Lighter paper burns faster and adds less taste. Heavier paper burns slower and holds more flower. A gum line of gum arabic runs along one edge so the paper seals when you lick it.

Paper materials
- Wood pulp: The thinnest and cheapest option. Burns fast, leaves little flavor behind, and dominates gas station and convenience store racks.
- Rice: Very thin with a slow, even burn. Popular with people who want the flower flavor to lead.
- Hemp: Slightly thicker than pulp, slow burning, and made from the same plant you are rolling. Carries a faint earthy note.
- Flax (linen): Strong fibers that resist tearing during the roll. Common in premium packs and in papers marketed for even burn.
Common sizes
- Single Wide: About 70 mm by 36 mm. Good for a small personal joint.
- 1¼: About 78 mm by 44 mm. The default size in most US shops.
- King Size: About 110 mm by 55 mm. Holds roughly twice what a 1¼ holds.
- King Size Slim: Same 110 mm length with a narrower width. Slower burn and less paper per hit.
Bleached, unbleached, and gum
Bleached papers are white and go through a chlorine or oxygen process. Unbleached papers keep a tan or brown tone and skip that step. Neither is safer than the other in a meaningful way; the difference is mostly appearance and how the paper tastes near the end of the joint. Gum lines come in standard gum arabic and in natural, unrefined versions. Some packs add flavor to the gum, which transfers to the smoke.

How to roll a joint
- Grind the flower to a coarse, even consistency. Remove stems and seeds.
- Hold the paper with the gum line facing up and away from you, then fold a shallow crease along the middle.
- Sprinkle flower into the crease in a uniform line. Keep it looser at both ends so air can pass.
- Pinch both ends of the paper between your thumbs and index fingers and roll the front edge up and over the flower.
- Tuck the front edge under the back edge and work it down until the flower is enclosed.
- Lick the gum line and press the seam closed from the middle outward.
- Twist or fold the open end, then tap the joint on a hard surface to settle the fill.
Storage and handling
- Keep packs sealed. Paper absorbs moisture from the air and burns unevenly once it does.
- Store away from direct sunlight, which dries the gum line and makes it fail to stick.
- Roll on a clean, dry surface. Oils from your hands can spot the paper and cause runs.
- Use a filter tip or crutch if you want a firmer mouthpiece and less loose flower in your mouth.
Health note
Burning any plant material creates smoke that carries tar and carbon monoxide. Cannabis smoke contains many of the same irritants as tobacco smoke, and regular inhalation can worsen cough and respiratory symptoms. Paper choice does not remove that risk. Vaporizing delivers cannabinoids without combustion if smoke exposure is a concern.
