Answer first

Print the tube standing upright in PETG at a 0.2 mm layer height with four perimeters and a 40 percent infill, then add an O-ring groove in the lid and seal the inside wall. That combination gives you a rigid, odor-resistant tube that survives a pocket or a backpack. The full build takes about 90 minutes of print time and 20 minutes of assembly.

Prerequisites

Design and print steps

  1. Measure five rolled joints with calipers and record the largest diameter and longest length. Use those maximums, not an average.
  2. Set the inner diameter in CAD to the largest joint diameter plus 1.5 mm of clearance so the paper does not drag.
  3. Set the tube length to the longest joint plus 12 mm of headroom for the cap lip.
  4. Set the wall thickness to 2 mm and add a 1 mm chamfer at both rims to prevent print elephants-foot from blocking the bore.
  5. Model the lid as a separate part with a 3 mm deep skirt that slides over the tube body.
  6. Cut a 1.5 mm wide, 1 mm deep groove around the inside of the lid skirt for the O-ring.
  7. Add a 3 mm hole through the lid top and cover it with a silicone plug, so pressure changes do not force odor past the seal.
  8. Export both parts as STL at 0.1 mm mesh tolerance and confirm the slicer shows no non-manifold errors.
  9. Orient the tube vertically on the build plate, axis aligned with Z, so layer seams run around the circumference rather than across it.
  10. Orient the lid with the skirt facing down and enable a 5 mm brim for bed adhesion.
  11. Slice with 0.2 mm layers, 4 perimeters, 40 percent gyroid infill, 240 C nozzle, 80 C bed, and 40 mm/s outer wall speed.
  12. Print the tube first, inspect the bore for strings, then print the lid.
  13. Deburr both rims and sand the inside of the tube with 400 grit, then 800 grit, working along the axis.
  14. Wash the parts in warm water with mild dish soap and let them air dry fully.
  15. Seal the interior wall with a thin coat of food-grade silicone or press in a silicone tube insert cut to length.
  16. Cure the sealant for the full label time before any contact with flower.
  17. Fit the O-ring into the lid groove and test the cap fit ten times to seat the seal.
  18. Run a smell test: load an empty tube with a spent joint, cap it, and leave it in a bag for two hours.

Material notes

PETG resists impact and handles pocket heat better than PLA, which softens in a car and deforms under summer conditions. Avoid ASA and ABS unless you have an enclosure and ventilation, and skip resin prints entirely because cured resin is brittle and hard to clean. If the tube will sit in direct sun, print in black or another opaque color and keep the wall at 2.5 mm.

Storage and legal notes

Keep the loaded tube out of heat and light, since THC degrades with exposure to both. Check your state rules on carrying cannabis in public and on container requirements before you travel with the tube. A printed tube is not child-resistant, so treat it as a pocket accessory, not a compliant retail package.
