Cannabis Grow Tent Setup

A cannabis grow tent works when you control four things: light, air exchange, temperature and humidity, and odor. Put the tent on a level floor near a power source, build the frame and hang the light and exhaust fan before you attach any ducting, then run the tent empty for 24 hours to confirm the environment holds steady before a plant goes inside.

What You Need Before You Start

Setup Steps

  1. Pick a room with stable temperatures and a grounded outlet, away from windows, radiators, and foot traffic.
  2. Assemble the tent frame on a level surface and slide the canvas over it before you tighten the fittings.
  3. Lay a drip tray or liner on the floor to catch runoff and protect the tent base.
  4. Mount the carbon filter high inside the tent, where heat collects.
  5. Attach the inline fan to the filter and clamp the connection tight.
  6. Run ducting from the fan out of the tent to a window, attic, or adjacent room.
  7. Hang the grow light from the top bars using adjustable ratchet hangers.
  8. Set light height and dimmer output to the manufacturer's recommended distance for seedlings or clones.
  9. Plug the light into a timer and set an 18 hours on, 6 hours off cycle for vegetative growth.
  10. Install the clip fan so it moves air across the canopy without blowing directly on one plant.
  11. Run the empty tent for 24 hours and log the high and low temperature and humidity readings.
  12. Adjust fan speed or open a passive intake vent until readings hold inside your target range.
  13. Fill pots with medium, water to settle it, and let the pots drain before planting.
  14. Plant seeds or clones, close the tent, and record readings once a day for the first week.

Lighting

Match light output to the tent footprint, not to the tent volume. A light that covers a 4x4 ft area at 24 inches will run too hot and too intense in a 2x3 ft tent. Keep a 12 to 24 inch gap between the fixture and the canopy, and raise the light as plants stretch instead of dimming it below the recommended setting. Vegetative plants run on 18 hours of light; switching to 12 hours of light and 12 of dark triggers flowering.

Air Exchange and Odor

The exhaust fan does the heavy lifting. It pulls hot, humid, odor-loaded air through the carbon filter and pushes it out of the tent, which also draws fresh air in through the passive intake vents. Size the fan so it replaces the tent's air volume in one to three minutes, and keep the duct run short with few bends. A filter that is undersized for the fan will leak odor, and a filter that is oversized will choke airflow.

Temperature and Humidity

Most indoor cannabis grows sit between 65 and 80 F with 40 to 60 percent relative humidity during vegetative growth, then drop humidity in late flower to protect against bud rot. Measure at canopy height, not at the tent floor, because the two readings often differ by several degrees. If the tent runs hot, raise fan speed first, then shorten the duct run, then increase the distance between light and canopy.
