- Oxygen converts THC to CBN. CBN is a cannabinoid with weaker psychoactive effect.
- UV light breaks down cannabinoids and terpenes. Green and amber glass block part of the UV range. Clear glass blocks almost none.
- Heat drives off volatile terpenes. Terpenes boil at 310°F and up as pure compounds, but they evaporate at room temperature over time.
- Dry air stops the cure and makes trichomes brittle.
Jar materials
Glass
Glass does not react with the plant, does not hold odor, and cleans with soap and water. Amber glass blocks light in the 200 to 500 nm range. Mason jars with a rubber gasket and a metal bail lid seal better than screw bands alone. Clear Mason jars work if the storage spot has no light.

Stainless steel
Food-grade 304 stainless blocks all light. Steel jars cost more than glass and you cannot see inside without opening them, which adds air exchange. Look for a silicone gasket and a clamp lid.
Plastic
Polyethylene bags and cheap plastic tubs let oxygen through the wall. Static charge pulls trichomes off the flower. Plastic also absorbs terpenes and holds them after the jar is empty. Use plastic only for transport, not storage.
Humidity targets
58% RH suits flower for vaping because it grinds and burns in a vaporizer without clogging. 62% RH suits long storage and hand rolling. Below 55% RH the flower crumbles and loses weight. Above 65% RH mold and yeast grow. Two-way packs, sold as 58% and 62% versions, add or remove water vapor to hold the set point. They last about 2 to 4 months in a sealed jar.
Temperature and light
Store at 60°F to 70°F. Room temperature around 70°F is fine for 3 to 6 months. Above 78°F, terpene loss and THC conversion speed up. A freezer slows the chemistry but the cold makes trichomes brittle and ice crystals form on the surface. Freeze only vacuum-sealed flower you plan to keep for a year or more, and let the jar reach room temperature before you open it. Skip the refrigerator. It cycles through wet and dry air each time the door opens.
Mold and curing
Fresh flower holds 62% to 65% water content at harvest. Mold needs water activity above 0.65, which lines up with roughly 65% RH in the jar. Burp new flower for 10 to 15 minutes a day for the first week. Stop burping at 62% RH. Throw out flower with white fuzz, a musty smell, or gray patches at the stem. Mold spores are not removed by heat.
Steps
- Dry flower to 10% to 12% moisture, measured with a moisture meter or by stem snap.
- Fill the jar to 75% capacity.
- Add one 62% humidity pack per 28 g. Scale up for larger jars.
- Seal the lid and press down on the gasket.
- Store in a cabinet, drawer, or box with no light.
- Open the jar once a week for the first month, then once a month after that.
Signs storage failed
- Brown or tan color where it was green.
- Hay or ammonia smell.
- Flower dust in the bottom of the jar, a sign of dried trichomes.
- A brittle stem that snaps with no fiber.
- White or gray fuzz on the surface or at the stem base.
Label jars with the strain name and the date. Terpene content drops after 6 months even in ideal conditions. THC content drops more slowly.
