What a cannabis dab pen is

A cannabis dab pen is a battery plus a cartridge. The battery sends current to a coil or ceramic rod inside the cartridge. The rod heats cannabis oil to 300 to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. The oil turns to vapor. The user pulls the vapor through a mouthpiece. Most cartridges hold 0.5 grams or 1 gram of oil. THC content in that oil runs from 60% to more than 90%. Dried flower sits near 15% to 25% THC by weight.

Distillate, live resin, and rosin

Distillate is refined oil. Ethanol or CO2 strips cannabinoids from plant material. The result is THC at 80% to 95% with few other compounds. Producers add terpenes back for flavor. Live resin comes from plant material that was frozen after harvest. The freeze keeps terpenes that heat destroys. Rosin is pressed with heat and pressure and no solvent. Solvent-based extracts get tested for residual solvents in legal markets.

Voltage and temperature

Low voltage, 2.5 to 3.2 volts, gives a small hit and keeps terpenes intact. Mid range, 3.3 to 3.8 volts, is the common setting. High voltage, 3.9 to 4.8 volts, burns more oil per pull and can scorch the coil. A coil that runs dry tastes burnt and the cartridge is hard to recover.

How to use one

  1. Charge the battery.
  2. Attach the cartridge. Turn it finger tight. Overtightening cracks glass and floods the airway.
  3. Set voltage. Start low.
  4. Press the button, or inhale on a draw-activated model. Take a 3 second pull.
  5. Wait 10 to 15 minutes. Inhaled THC reaches the blood in seconds and peaks in 10 to 30 minutes.

Legal status in the US

Cannabis is a Schedule I controlled substance under federal law. As of 2025, 24 states and the District of Columbia allow adult-use sales to people 21 and older. Other states allow medical use with no adult-use sales. State rules cover testing, labels, and purchase limits. Delta-8 THC from hemp falls under the 2018 Farm Bill if delta-9 THC stays below 0.3% by dry weight. Several states ban delta-8 anyway.

Risks

In 2019, the CDC tracked 2,807 hospitalizations and 68 deaths from EVALI, a lung injury tied to vitamin E acetate in illicit THC cartridges. Lab tests on regulated products check for vitamin E acetate, pesticides, heavy metals, and residual solvents. Unregulated cartridges carry no such testing. High-potency oil raises tolerance faster than flower. Daily use of 80% THC oil can push tolerance within weeks.

Storage and care

Store cartridges upright at room temperature. Heat thins the oil and causes leaks. Light degrades cannabinoids. A clogged mouthpiece clears with a short preheat cycle or a pin. Do not store a cartridge on a battery in a hot car.
