It removes the two biggest failure points of coco growing, which are salt residue and unlocked calcium and magnesium sites, and it drains well enough to survive hand watering. The criteria used here are prep quality (washed and buffered or raw), aeration, water holding, salt and nutrient loading, pH behavior, and how well the medium fits hand watering versus drip fertigation.
A buffered blend is coir that has been rinsed of excess sodium and potassium salts, then soaked in a calcium and magnesium solution so the medium's exchange sites are already occupied by the nutrients your plant needs. The perlite fraction adds air porosity around the root zone, which is where coco shines compared with dense peat mixes.
Best for: first-time coco growers, small tents, and anyone running two to six plants who wants predictable feeding without prep work.
Coco coir is the pith and short fiber left over after coconut husk is processed for longer fibers, which makes it a byproduct material rather than a mined one. It holds a large amount of water while keeping air space between particles, so roots get moisture and oxygen at the same time. That balance is the main reason coco performs well under frequent feeding.
Coir also has a high cation exchange capacity, meaning it grabs onto positively charged nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium. This is useful once the medium is charged correctly, and it is the reason unbuffered coir can lock out calcium early in a grow.
Raw bricks are the cheapest way to fill a room, but you take on the prep work. Most need a thorough rinse with low-EC water to bring runoff salinity down, then a buffering soak before any plant goes in.

Perlite changes how the medium behaves more than almost anything else you add. A 70/30 coir to perlite mix is the common middle ground. Heavier coir, closer to 80/20, holds more water and suits dry climates or infrequent watering. Lighter mixes at 50/50 drain fast and suit drain-to-waste drip systems with several feeds per day.
Best for: 70/30 for hand watering in tents, 50/50 for automated drip on a timer, 80/20 for high heat and low humidity.
Treat coco as a hydroponic medium, not soil. Start with a complete nutrient solution from the first true leaves, and include a calcium and magnesium supplement unless your base nutrient already covers it. Buy washed compressed bricks and buffer them yourself. You trade labor and water for a lower cost per liter, and you control the calcium and magnesium charge on the medium.
