What an air filter does for a cannabis grow

An air filter captures particles and odors before they leave your grow space. For cannabis, you need two jobs done: remove dust, mold spores, and pollen that can harm plants, and remove the skunky smell so neighbors and roommates stay unaware. A HEPA filter handles particles. A carbon filter handles odor. Many growers run both in series.

• A grow tent or sealed room with an exhaust fan rated in cubic feet per minute (CFM).
• Flexible ducting and clamps that match your fan and filter flanges.
• A filter sized for your fan's CFM. Undersized filters choke airflow.
• Scissors or a utility knife for ducting, plus a screwdriver for mounting.

How to choose and install an air filter

1. Measure the volume of your grow space. Multiply length by width by height in feet. Example: 4 x 4 x 6 feet = 96 cubic feet.
2. Calculate the minimum CFM. Divide volume by 5 minutes (a common air exchange target). 96 / 5 = 19.2 CFM. Add 20 percent for ducting and filter resistance. Round up to 25 CFM.
3. Pick the filter type. Use a HEPA filter for particulate removal. Use an activated carbon filter for odor. Combine both if you need clean exhaust and no smell.
4. Match the filter to the fan. Choose a filter with a CFM rating at or above your fan's rating. A 200 CFM fan needs a 200 CFM or higher filter.
5. Mount the filter inside the grow space, near the ceiling or top of the tent. Odor and heat rise.
6. Connect the filter to the fan with ducting. Keep the run as short and straight as possible. Each bend reduces airflow.
7. Seal every joint with clamps or foil tape. Leaks pull unfiltered air into the exhaust.
8. Turn on the fan. Hold a tissue near the filter intake. A strong pull means good airflow. Weak pull means a clog or a mismatch.
9. Replace or clean the filter on schedule. HEPA filters last 6 to 12 months. Carbon filters last 4 to 8 months in a heavy grow. Replace sooner if odor returns.

Maintenance and signs it is time to replace

Check the pre-filter monthly. Rinse or vacuum it to keep airflow high. A carbon filter that lets smell through needs replacement, not cleaning. A HEPA filter that shows a pressure drop or visible dust load needs replacement. Keep a spare filter on hand so you never run unfiltered air during flower.

One more note: never block the filter intake with plants or equipment. Leave at least 6 inches of clearance. That single habit extends filter life and keeps your fan from overheating.
